Enough

...of these so-called "comedies" about the soul-crushing ennui of life. Or at least, if they have to be made, let's see about putting something funny in them, so they actually live up to their descriptions. Bloody hell.

  1. And what particular cringe-fest brought that one on?

  2. I watched that with a group of friends. 30 minutes in, we hadn't laughed, so we took it out.

I can't remember whether we played God of War or watched Team America:World Police. Either way, it was much better than Sideways.

  3. I thought you meant Jam before I read the comments.

  4. Ah c'mon! A tad harse methinks. It's not Payne's greatest but it's not a bad film and it's no worse than "About Schmidt". It did get far too much exposure though.

  5. "No worse than About Schmidt"

    That's a compliment?

  6. Bad example; should have known you weren't a fan of that either. I don't actually think either film functions well as comedy. Studios just slap the word 'comedy' on posters and trailers to get more pople to go and see it. Were you personally offended or just annoyed that your expectations were confounded?

  7. I don't think either film functions as a film, to be honest. Slapping "comedy" on it is, I suspect, merely a clever way of passing off the many, many flaws as "humour".

No, my personl expectations weren't confounded since I never expected it to be my kind of thing. However, I'd reckoned without it being a film utterly devoid of plot and populated by tiresome twats.

  8. Well said!! I never saw "Sideways" but I hate the exact type of story you're talking about. A lot of the autobiographical indie comics are the same way.
